The Title IX Law Team is a resource for students, parents, and faculty/staff involved in Title IX cases nationwide. Title IX is a federal law that governs how all schools and colleges that receive any form of federal funding must respond to allegations of sexual harassment, sexual assault, and sex-based discrimination within their educational community. Almost all public and private K-12 schools and colleges in the U.S. receive some form of federal funding and are subject to Title IX’s rules and regulations. Title IX requires schools and colleges to designate a Title IX Coordinator to receive and administer complaints, and it requires that schools provide certain due process rights to both people filing complaints (complainants) and people accused of violations (respondents). The goal of Title IX’s regulations is to ensure that schools and colleges do not just brush complaints under the carpet without investigating them and, on the other hand, that people accused of sexual assault, sexual harassment, and sex-based discrimination are not unfairly punished or stigmatized without a full and fair investigation and a neutral decision-maker. Title IX also allows both parties to appeal and prevents both parties from retaliation.
